Circular No 243/2017
Dated 27 Oct 2017
To Members of the Malaysian Bar
Malaysian Bar Acquires Wisma Straits Trading
We are pleased to announce that the Malaysian Bar is now the proud owner of Wisma Straits Trading on Leboh Pasar Besar, a short distance from the current Bar Council premises.
The sale and purchase agreement was completed on 20 Oct 2017, and the handover took place on 26 Oct 2017.
The search for a new building had begun as far back as 2006.  The purchase of Wisma Straits Trading has been made possible as a result of a resolution of the Malaysian Bar, adopted at its 69th Annual General Meeting ("AGM") on 14 Mar 2015, which increased the levy for the Building Fund from RM100 to RM250 per annum, with effect from 1 Jan 2015 for a period of 15 years.
Currently, rented premises are being used to house the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee ("KLBC"), Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board ("ASDB"), Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) ("LAC KL"), and Bar Council Risk Management and Professional Indemnity Insurance ("RM and PII") Department.
Moving forward, we are working towards accommodating the Bar Council Secretariat, along with all the above-mentioned entities and departments, under one roof in Wisma Straits Trading in 2018.
Thereafter, there will still be additional space in Wisma Straits Trading that can be let out to tenants, which will generate revenue for the Malaysian Bar.
I thank each Member of the Bar for your support, without which we would not have been able to purchase this building.  I also extend my appreciation to the members of the Bar Council and the Office Bearers of the Bar, both past and present, who have been involved in the process of identifying and acquiring Wisma Straits Trading.
Thank you.
