Malaysia-Seminar on Personal Data Protection Act 2010: How it Affects Your Legal Practice (20 Mar 2014)

Seminar on Personal Data Protection Act 2010: How it Affects Your Legal Practice (20 Mar 2014)

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Circular No 055/2014
Dated 13 Mar 2014
To Members of the Malaysian Bar
Seminar on Personal Data Protection Act 2010: How it Affects Your Legal Practice (20 Mar 2014)
The coming into force of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 ("PDPA") has immediate and direct implications for Members of the Bar.  Jabatan Perlindungan Data Peribadi ("JPDP", also known as Personal Data Protection Department) of Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia ("KKMM", also known as the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia) has made clear that all Members of the Malaysian Bar will have to comply with the PDPA.

The PDPA seeks to regulate the processing of personal data of individuals involved in commercial transactions, by data users, so as to provide protection to the individual's personal data, thereby safeguarding the interests of such individuals.

Since the PDPA came into force on 15 Nov 2013, the Bar Council Secretariat has been receiving numerous enquiries from Members seeking clarification on the PDPA, particularly on registration of firms as data users, and more specifically, how the PDPA affects their practice.

To provide an opportunity for Members to obtain information and raise their concerns, the Bar Council is organising a seminar, the details of which are as follows:
Date:               20 Mar 2014 (Thursday)
Time:               9:30 am to 11:30 am (Registration will begin at 9:00 am)
Venue:             Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Bar Council, 15 Leboh Pasar Besar, 50050 Kuala Lumpur
CPD Code:     T3/20032014/BC/BC3808/1
CPD Point:      One
The seminar is structured upon the application of the PDPA, and is intended to be an interactive session where Members can ask questions and share their views on the PDPA.  The speaker, Dr Zainal Abidin Sait, Timbalan Ketua Pengarah, JPDP, KKMM will cover the scope, impact and effect of the PDPA, on the legal profession in particular.

Admission to this exclusive seminar is free, but advance registration is required.  Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis for 150 participants to attend the seminar in person.  Alternatively, Members are encouraged to participate in the session online via interactive live streaming, where questions can be posed to, and comments shared with, the speaker.  Participation through live streaming is open to the first 300 registrants.

To attend the seminar, kindly:
(1) Register online here; or
(2) Complete and submit the attached registration form by email to germaine@malaysianbar.org.my or by fax to 03-2031 6640.
The Bar Council Secretariat will contact you to confirm that you have secured a place for the seminar.

Please contact Germaine Low, Officer, by telephone at 03-2050 2094 or by email at germaine@malaysianbar.org.my, should you have any enquiries.

Thank you.
