Invitation to a Forum on Mental Health Care
and the Rights of the Mentally Ill in Malaysia (16 May 2013)
The Research Committee of the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur ("BCLAC (KL)") is organising a forum on Mental Health Care and the Rights of the Mentally Ill in Malaysia.
The forum will focus on the different categories of mental illness, the facilities and assistance available to deal with the mentally ill, and the legal rights of the mentally ill.
The forum is organised to create awareness and increase the understanding of mental health care in the country — legal aid centres, service centres, care givers, lawyers and the public in general.

The speakers are:
(1) Dr Rozaidah Jaafar, Physiatrist at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang, holds a Masters in Medicine (Physiatrist) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia;
(2) Datin Dr Ang Kim Teng, President of Malaysian Health Association, public health consultant, retired as the Selangor State Health Director in 2008; and
(3) Edmund Bon/New Sin Yew, Edmund is a Chevening scholar who holds a Master's Degree in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University, activist and Human Rights lawyer; New Sin Yew is the Co-Deputy Chairperson of the Kuala Lumpur Young Lawyers Committee, has been involved in various public interest litigation cases and is dealing with issues concerning rights of persons with disabilities.
The forum will be moderated by Elaine Heung Sau Mun, Pupils Research Programme (BCLAC (KL)).

Briefing on Continuing Professional Development ("CPD") Scheme
The Bar Council CPD Department is organising a briefing on the CPD Scheme for the benefit of the Members in the northern region.  The CPD Scheme, which came into effect on 1 July 2012, is currently in its first 24-month cycle. This Scheme is currently voluntary and the first cycle will end on 30 June 2014.
To encourage a better understanding of the CPD Scheme, and to engage Members about their views on the Scheme, Steven Thiru, Vice-President of the Malaysian Bar, Dipendra Harshad Rai, Chairperson of the Professional Standards and Development Committee, and Santhi Latha, Director of the CPD Department will be in Penang to conduct this briefing.
