Press Release

Malaysian Bar welcomes Karpal Singh's acquittal

The Malaysian Bar welcomes the High Court's decision to acquit lawyer and Member of Parliament YB Karpal Singh of charges under the Sedition Act 1948 for his statements, made over a year ago, on the removal of the Perak Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Nizar Jamaluddin by HRH Sultan Azlan Shah.

The Malaysian Bar has been a staunch and unfaltering advocate of the repeal of the Sedition Act.  We have been resolute in our stand that the Act is an authoritarian, repressive and anachronistic law that has long outlived any perceived utility it might ever have had.  It is an absolute affront to democracy, as it severely encroaches upon the public enjoyment and exercise of the fundamental civil liberties enshrined in our Constitution.  Furthermore, it has been wielded selectively, to prosecute, in particular, those whose viewpoints differ from the ruling government's.

We urge the government to demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law and to democratic processes by encouraging open discourse on issues of concern to the Malaysian public.  We also call on the Government to repeal the Act, and to refrain from using it, particularly as a means of stifling debate and exchange of opinions.

Freedom of expression is an indisputable hallmark of any democracy and must be safeguarded jealously if Malaysia is to lay any claim to being a democratic nation.

Circular No 165/2010
Dated 14 June 2010

To all Members of the Malaysian Bar and pupils in chambers,

ROCKROCKCONSTI ALBUM AND CONCERT

27 million Malaysians. 11 million voters. 4 million more eligible Malaysians who haven't registered to vote.  A Federal Constitution that guarantees all of our rights and freedoms, and a democratic system of government that answers to us.  But how many Malaysians know this?

The MyConstitution Campaign
The MyConstitution Campaign has been running since November 2009.  Our aim is to educate Malaysians from all walks of life on the Federal Constitution, to teach them about their rights and our system of government.  We run forums and workshops all across Malaysia, from universities to schools, from orang asli kampongs to the cities and towns of East Malaysia.  We publish the "Rakyat Guides", booklets that explain in simple language, what the Federal Constitution says.  The Campaign is non-profit and the committee that runs this Campaign does it on a voluntary basis.

The Campaign and U!
Music is freedom of speech.  Music is freedom of expression.  Musicians coming together to make music is freedom of association.  Fans coming together to listen to music is freedom of assembly.

We know that there is no better way to reach out to the youth of our country than through music.  Music has the power to teach.  Music can open minds.  Music has the power to make change possible.

And so the MyConstitution Campaign wants to make an album and hold a RockRockConsti concert to celebrate "Elections, Rights & Democracy" and we invite you to join us!

The concert will tentatively be held in November 2010.  The venue has yet to be decided but it will be somewhere cool and hawt!  It would be awesome if you or your band or your organisation could compose an original song relating to the theme for the album, and to perform at the concert and promotional gigs.

If you're interested to share your talent, please let us know by 20 June 2010 (Sunday) by emailing your reply (with your name and handphone no) to perlembagaanku@gmail.com.  Kindly attention your email to Yeoh Tung Seng and state in the subject header "Yes, I/We are Interested in RockRockConsti!".  You will then be invited to a meeting to finalise the way forward.

For further information, please contact Lim Ka Ea by telephone at 03-2031 7103 or by email at kaea@malaysianbar.org.my.

Let's rock this nation!

Constitutional Law Committee
