Auld Lang Syne: The New Year's Song Explained
As a steadfast supporter of kisses at midnight and in-unison countdowns, I've always considered New Year's Eve one of my favorite holidays. There is something bittersweet about collectively celebrating a year's end and looking forward to a fresh start to the tune of Auld Lang Syne. This video dives into the history of how Robert Burns's traditional Scottish poem became a New Year's anthem all over the world (and includes Burns's lyrics).

Come Face to Face With an
Adorable Arctic Fox
On the snowy coasts of Canada's Hudson Bay, a trio of curious arctic foxes decided to investigate their human neighbors. During a six-week season, the foxes visited a nearby tour company camp several times. With each visit, they got a little more adventurous and a little less shy, until eventually they approached people outside the camp. The tour leader, who captured this footage of a fox nicknamed "Spot," had never seen one of the animals get so close, and he says the sight is "magical, and fills me with joy."

These Kaleidoscopic Masterpieces Are Invisible to the Naked Eye
Diatoms—microscopic single-celled organisms that build themselves elaborate, geometric glass shells—are fascinating all on their own. But I never knew about the Victorian art of diatom arranging. Klaus Kemp, a modern-day microscopist, is reviving this unique art form by collecting exemplars of the many varied diatom species and using a minuscule needle to arrange them into dazzling compositions under a microscope. This short film from Matthew Kilip gave me a charming glimpse into a world of artistic obsession.

Adorable Lemurs Roam Free on This Ancient Island
Many people start their day with a cup of coffee. If you're a ring-tailed lemur, however, your morning ritual involves finding a sunny spot, opening your arms wide, and basking in the warm sunshine. Sounds amazing, right? If you want to fall in love with this playful endangered species like I did, watch this inspiring (and adorable) mini-doc by Robin Hoskyns about Madagascar's Anja Community Reserve. The sunbathing lemurs at 9:06 might even convince you to trade in your daily caffeine fix for some Vitamin D instead.
