Circular No 217/2018
Dated 7 Sept 2018

To Members of the Malaysian Bar

Invitation to Serve as Legal Companions on JBG's Panel of Solicitors; and Course on Sexual Offences against Children and Legal Companion Services (30 and 31 Oct 2018)
We refer to Circular No 038/2018 dated 12 Feb 2018 entitled "Invitation to Serve on the Panel of Solicitors of Jabatan Bantuan Guaman".

Jabatan Bantuan Guaman ("JBG") is a Government department that provides legal aid services to the public under the Legal Aid Act 1971.  In order to serve the public effectively, JBG has established a panel of solicitors — comprising advocates and solicitors of the High Court of Malaya who are appointed by the Director-General of JBG — to handle civil and Syariah cases.  Advocates and solicitors who are assigned cases will be paid fees at the rate(s) prescribed by JBG.

Due to the increasing number of cases being handled by JBG, and to cater to the need to appoint "legal companions" for children who are victims of sexual crimes (in accordance with the Legal Aid (Amendment) Act 2017 that came into operation on 1 Dec 2017), JBG invites Members of the Bar to apply to serve on its panel of solicitors, as legal companions.

If you are keen to serve on JBG's panel of solicitors, kindly click here for more information, and here for details on how to register.  To register as a legal companion, please log in, and click the section on "Jenayah Kanak-Kanak".

All applications are subject to approval and appointment by JBG.

Further to this, JBG will be organising a two-day course on "Sexual Offences against Children and Legal Companion Services" on 30 and 31 Oct 2018 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at Institut Latihan Kehakiman dan Perundangan ("ILKAP"), 5 Persiaran Universiti, Seksyen 15, 43650 Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

The purpose of this course is to train legal companions who have been appointed and registered by JBG.

To register for, or to obtain clarification about, the course, kindly contact Zuzila bt Othman of JBG by telephone at 03-8885 1805 or by email at zuzila.othman@jbg.gov.my.

Thank you.
