Inside the Lives of Japan's Extreme Recluses

Japan is a country of opposing realities, observes photographer Maika Elan. It is both modern and traditional, bustling and lonely. And caught somewhere in the middle are the hikikomori—people, mostly men, who have decided to pull away from society altogether. In the company of a social worker, Elan visited their homes to try and understand what has driven them to extreme isolation, and what it will take to draw them out.
