Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme -- An Overview and How to Apply

Circular No 002/2015
Dated 6 Jan 2015
To Members of the Malaysian Bar
Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme — An Overview and How to Apply
The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme ("QLTS") is a fast-track route that enables lawyers from other jurisdictions to be admitted as solicitors of England and Wales, by the Solicitors Regulation Authority ("SRA").
The QLTS ensures that lawyers who are qualified in other jurisdictions, meet the standard of knowledge and skill required of a newly qualified solicitor of England and Wales.  This is done by two separate tests which are administered on the SRA's behalf by legal education and training organisation, Kaplan QLTS.
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants for the QLTS must be qualified lawyers from recognised jurisdictions.  Click here to view the recognised jurisdictions.
In order to be eligible for the tests, it is not necessary for you to have worked in England or Wales, or to have studied in the UK.  But you will need to provide evidence that you meet the English language requirements.
How to apply?
If you meet the requirements stated by the SRA, you may do the following to apply for the QLTS:
  • Ensure you meet the English language requirement;
  • Apply to the Bar Council for a Certificate of Good Standing;
  • Apply to the SRA for a Certificate of Eligibility; and
  • Contact Kaplan QLTS to book a place on the assessments.
Click here to learn more about the QLTS.  You may also view the SRA's comprehensive leaflet on the QLTS here.  A guide by the Law Society of England and Wales is attached for your reference.
Should you have any enquiries, please contact the SRA Contact Centre by telephone at 00 44 (0) 121 329 6800, or click here to visit its website.
Thank you.
