Call to Action -- Movement to Abolish the Sedition Act 1948

Circular No 186/2014
Dated 21 Aug 2014
Call to Action — Movement to Abolish the Sedition Act 1948
The Malaysian Bar has long advocated for the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948 ("Act").  The Act is a draconian, repressive and archaic piece of legislation that undermines democratic institutions, and is an affront to fundamental liberties.
In July 2012, the Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib b Tun Haji Abdul Razak, delivered a speech where he promised that the Government would repeal several undemocratic pieces of legislation, including the Act.  In July 2013, the Prime Minister again reiterated the intention of the Government to repeal the Act and to replace it with a national harmony act.
However, the Government has not fulfilled its promise.  No serious attempt has been made to repeal the law.  The Act continues to encroach upon the public enjoyment and exercise of fundamental liberties.
The National Young Lawyers Committee ("NYLC") intends to initiate a nationwide movement to strengthen the advocacy for the Government to abolish the Act.  NYLC will engage with stakeholders, and embark on public advocacy campaigns and awareness-building programmes to achieve the objectives of the movement.
NYLC calls upon all Members of the Bar to join this movement.  You do not have to be a young lawyer or a member of NYLC.  The time for talking is over.  It is now the time to take action and to bring an end to this outdated vestige of a colonial era.
A meeting to kick-start this movement will be held as follows:
Date:               28 Aug 2014 (Thursday)
Time:              7:30 pm
Venue:            Meeting Room 1, 3rd Floor, Bar Council, 15 Leboh Pasar Besar, 50050 Kuala Lumpur

Thank you.
