Graduates from Universiti Utara Malaysia and Multimedia University Still Required to Obtain the Certificate of Completion

Notwithstanding the evaluation conducted by the Evaluation Committee headed by the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court, YBhg Dato' Hashim b Hamzah, on 19 to 21 Mar 2011 and 12 to 15 Apr 2011, respectively, graduates from Universiti Utara Malaysia ("UUM") and Multimedia University ("MMU") are still required to obtain the Certificate of Completion before they can be called to the Bar. 

Any student who has passed the final examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Laws conducted by UUM, with effect from 16 Mar 2008, and MMU, with effect from 10 Aug 2008, is deemed to be a qualified person within the ambit of section 3 of the Legal Profession Act 1976 ("LPA").

These graduates are exempted from obtaining the Certificate in Legal Practice from the Legal Profession Qualifying Board ("QB") and are allowed to undergo the period of pupillage pursuant to section 12 of the LPA.

During the period of pupillage, graduates are required to undergo a training programme in the following areas of practice:

(1)    Conveyancing Practice;
(2)    Drafting of Pleadings (with specific attention on the subject of Tort and Contract); and
(3)    Opinion Writing (in the area of Tort and Contract).

Graduates from UUM and MMU have to complete this training programme and obtain the Certificate of Completion from the QB in order to be admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.
